Tyler Shupe Leather
Laced Barrel Reins, 5/8" Burgundy Latigo with Chrome Tan Lacing
Watch any clean run and you'll see it: the rider's hand slides up the rein coming in, drops down for the turn, slides back as they line up the next barrel. It happens a dozen times in fifteen seconds and most riders couldn't tell you they did it. That's the kind of feel a rein has to earn — smooth enough to slide on, textured enough to anchor, balanced enough to disappear in your hand.

Why Latigo Core
Most laced reins use harness leather for the core. We use latigo on purpose. Latigo has a softer feel in the hand from the first ride and a quicker response when you ask — the leather doesn't fight your cue, it carries it.
It also sheds sweat and lather instead of soaking it in. A harness-leather core that's been through a hot run gets heavy and stiff. Latigo stays light and alive in your hands, ride after ride.

Chevron Weave for Grip and Color
Each chrome tan lace is hand-cut and beveled, then woven through the latigo core in a chevron pattern — running down the rein in a series of arrowheads pointing toward your hands.
The beveling is the difference. A flat-cut lace either sits proud on the core and rubs your hand raw, or gets sanded so smooth it loses all grip. Beveling the edges gives you both: the lace lays flat against the latigo so it stays comfortable through long rides, but the edge is sharp enough to feel — and that feel is your grip. You hold the rein. The rein doesn't hold you.
Custom Lengths on Request
Every barrel racer rides a different length. Some want them short at 6.5'. Some want them long at 8'. We typically build between those two — 8' is usually the longest we can cut from a side of leather, though every now and then a longer side comes through the shop and we can go a little past it.
The laced grip section stays the same on every rein — same 30-hole chevron pattern, same hand position — so the feel in your hands doesn't change from one set to the next. Length is added or trimmed on the tail ends past the lacing. Leave a note at checkout for the length you want and we'll build to it.
Details Most Riders Don't Catch
The best runs come down to details most riders don't catch. The top 1% do. The leather under your hands, the bevel on the lace, the consistency of the grip, the swivel of the snap — none of it makes a difference on its own. All of it together is the difference between a rein you use and a rein you reach for first.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I order a custom length? Use the order notes field at checkout to specify the length you want. The laced grip section stays consistent on every rein — we adjust the length on the tail ends past the lacing. We typically build between 6.5' and 8', which is about as long as a side of leather runs. If you need something outside that range, leave a note and we'll let you know what we can do.
Why latigo core instead of harness leather? Latigo has a softer feel and a quicker response in the hand than harness leather, and it sheds sweat and lather instead of absorbing it. For a rein you want to feel light and stay clean through a hot run, latigo is the right choice.
Will the chevron lacing be uncomfortable in my hand? No. The lace is beveled before it's woven so it lays flat against the latigo core — you'll feel the edge for grip, but it won't sit proud or rub. The longer you ride them, the more the rein shapes to your hand.
Will the lace color bleed onto my hands or my horse? No. Chrome tan lacing is dyed all the way through and color-set, so it holds its color through sweat and wet conditions without transferring.
