Leather Care Instructions

Regular cleaning and conditioning keeps your leather strong, comfortable, and looking its best—and keeps your lifetime guarantee valid.

Recommended Products

  • Fiebing’s Liquid Saddle Soap (available at most farm stores or Amazon)
  • Skidmore’s Leather Conditioner
  • Any quality leather conditioner is fine—most are very similar in formula

What You’ll Ever Need

Water, saddle soap, a light oil, and leather conditioner. That’s it—no harsh chemicals.

Cleaning Routine

  • After each use: Wipe away dust and debris with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Before wet cleaning: If anything is crusted on, use a medium-bristle brush to lift sand and dirt out of stitches and creases.
  • General cleaning: Apply Fiebing’s Liquid Saddle Soap generously to a cloth and rub down the leather. Don’t be shy—use more than you think to lift embedded grime.
  • Deep cleaning: If it’s very dirty, you can dampen or lightly soak the leather and scrub with saddle soap to fully remove dirt.
  • Critical step: After any wet cleaning that strips oils, you must re-oil/condition once fully dry.

Drying & Conditioning

  • Dry time: Let the leather air-dry naturally for about 24 hours—it must be completely dry before applying oil or conditioner.
  • Condition: Apply Skidmore’s, or any good leather conditioner, once dry. Condition every 3–6 months or whenever leather feels dry.
  • Light oil (optional): If the leather feels particularly dry, a light oil may be used sparingly before conditioning.
  • Avoid over-conditioning: Too much can soften/weaken the leather over time.

Storage & Use

  • Do not store in plastic or airtight containers. Leather must breathe or it will mold—even indoors in humid climates.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight: Sunlight will change/darken color; store away from windows and heat sources.
  • Store in a cool, dry place. For long-term storage, use a breathable cloth bag or pillowcase.
  • Keep away from chemicals, oils, extreme heat/cold, and prolonged water exposure.
  • If soaked, allow to air-dry completely, then condition.

Quick Questions

How often should I clean?

A quick wipe after each use is ideal. A saddle-soap clean 3–4 times a year keeps leather in great shape; monthly is fantastic.

Which conditioner should I buy?

We like Skidmore’s, but most quality conditioners work similarly. Choose any reputable brand.

Can I seal leather in a bin to “protect” it?

No—sealed storage traps moisture and causes mold. Use breathable storage only.
