The Leather
We've handled hides from every major American tannery. We don't use any of them.
The tanneries you've heard of are good. We found one better. A small tannery most of the trade has never heard of, producing harness leather with a tighter grain, more consistent body, and a richer break-in than anything carrying a name brand. It costs us more than Hermann Oak. We pay it. Then we hand-pick our sides one at a time, because even the best tannery doesn't make every hide equal.
If you're a customer who buys reins on a tannery name, this might not be the listing for you. If you're a customer who buys reins on how they feel in your hands, keep reading.

Paired Together, Born Together
Every set is cut side by side from the same side of leather. Both reins come from the same hide, the same grain pattern, the same weight, the same temperament. They drape the same off the bit, swing the same off the tail, and break in together as you ride.
A lot of split reins on the market are cut from whatever scraps are left after a saddle is built — one rein heavier than the other, one stiffer, one a half-shade off in color. Ours aren't. They were born together. They ride together.
Custom Length and Weight on Request
Because these are cut from full sides of natural leather, every set varies a little in length and weight depending on where it falls on the hide. That natural variation lets us match you to a set that fits your preference. Leave a note at checkout with the length you want (anywhere between 6.5' and 8') and the weight you prefer (lighter or heavier). We'll pull the set from current inventory that comes closest, or cut a fresh pair if needed.
The Maker's Mark
Every pair is stamped with the Tyler Shupe Leather mark before it leaves the shop. Hand cut, hand rubbed, signed. Built one set at a time in Indiana.

Made by Hand, Built to Be Trusted
These reins are made to be used, trusted, and kept. The leather will darken with sweat and time. The edges will round to your grip. The hand-rub finish will deepen and the dark oil will hold its color. Years from now, with care, they'll still ride better than the day they shipped.
Frequently Asked Questions
What length are these split reins? We can cut anywhere between 6.5' and 8' on request — leave a note at checkout with the length you want. Most general Western riders prefer 7' to 8'. Riders who want a shorter, quicker rein often go 6.5' to 7'.
Will these work with a snaffle bit or a curb bit? Both. The waterloop tie ends attach cleanly to any standard bit ring. Split reins are the most versatile Western rein style — used for two-handed riding in a snaffle, one-handed neck reining in a curb, and everything in between.
What's the difference between 1/2" and 5/8" width? The 1/2" rein is lighter and quicker in the hand — preferred by riders who want a finesse feel, or by riders with smaller hands. The 5/8" rein is heavier and has more presence at the bit — preferred by riders who want a substantial rein with more weight in the tail for drape. Both are cut from the same harness leather.
Why aren't these doubled and stitched? Single-ply is a different style, not a lesser one. A single-ply harness leather rein has a softer hand, a quicker break-in, and a more direct feel than a doubled-and-stitched rein. Doubled and stitched is built for absolute heft and longevity — single-ply is built for feel. We make both styles for that reason.
How do I care for them? Wipe down with a dry cloth after use. A light leather conditioner every few months keeps the dark oil rich and the leather supple. Don't soak them — the oil finish is meant to repel water, not absorb it.
