Parts of a Western Bridle: Labeled Diagram, What Each Part Does, and How It Should Fit

The parts of a western bridle are the crown piece, the browband or ear piece, the cheek pieces and the bit ends they finish in, the throatlatch, the curb strap, and the reins, plus the bit itself and the buckles, keepers, and conchos that hold it all together. Six pieces of leather and the hardware that joins them. This guide labels every part of a western bridle on a real headstall, then does the two things most parts guides skip. First, what separates a good version of each part from a cheap one, down to the leather, the stitch, and the metal. Second, exactly how each part should fit, with the numbers. We build these for a living, so the fit checks come from the bench and from horses, not from a glossary.

Headstall or bridle: what is the difference?

Strictly, a bridle is three components: a headstall, a bit, and reins. The headstall is only the first of the three, the leather part on the horse's head, and the University of Missouri Extension puts it in exactly those terms. So every bridle contains a headstall, while a headstall on its own is not yet a bridle.

In practice, western riders say headstall when they mean the entire bridle, and nobody is confused at the barn. The distinction only matters when you are buying. A headstall listing almost never includes a bit, and usually does not include reins either, so a $115 headstall and a $115 bridle can be very different amounts of leather. Check the listing.

One more wrinkle in the vocabulary: some retailers draw the line at the noseband instead, calling anything without a noseband a headstall. That is a minority usage. It exists because western bridles typically do not have a noseband at all, which is one of the real structural differences between a western headstall and an English bridle.

The crown piece: the part that carries everything

The crown piece, also called the crownpiece or headpiece, is the strap that lies over the poll behind the ears. Every other part hangs off it, and every ounce of bit weight and poll pressure lands on it.

What makes a good one. Bearing surface, and where that surface sits. Pressure is force divided by area, so spreading the load over more leather helps, but the research below says placement matters just as much as width. The best evidence for this comes from English dressage research, since we could not find a published study that has pressure-mapped a western headstall, but the physics does not change at the state line. In a 2015 study published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, Murray and colleagues fitted 19 elite dressage horses with pressure mats and found that a headpiece redesigned to spread load away from known peak-pressure spots cut measured pressure under the headpiece by more than half, from about 49 kPa to about 24 kPa. The horses in the redesigned bridles also moved with measurably more carpal and tarsal flexion.

A 2025 study in Animals by MacKechnie-Guire and colleagues added a detail that matters for western tack. Measuring 11 dressage horses in a snaffle bridle and then a double bridle, which weighed 0.86 kg more, they found significantly higher force and pressure over the poll under the heavier rig at walk, trot, and canter, with one measure at canter falling just short of their significance threshold, and the authors attributed the difference to the extra weight. They also mapped an unloaded strip roughly two centimeters wide straight down the middle of the poll, with the load sitting on either side of it near the ear bases. Two caveats: a double bridle adds a second bit and second reins, not only weight, so weight and bridle type are tangled together, and every pressure study we could find is on English tack. We could not locate published pressure mapping of a western headstall. If you show in a heavily silver-mounted headstall, it is still worth knowing which way the evidence points.

What is under there. The poll is the first two neck vertebrae, the atlas and the axis, the joints above and between them, the attachment of the nuchal ligament, two of its three bursae, the parotid salivary glands reaching up toward the ear base, and major cranial nerves passing through. Veterinarians interviewed by The Horse describe all of that packed into a small area, while also cautioning that true primary poll pain is uncommon and that a lot of apparent poll soreness traces back to somewhere else entirely, including the hind limbs and the teeth. Do not diagnose your horse from a headstall. Do get the headstall out of the argument.

How it fits. The crown should lie flat behind the ears with no edge digging in and no bunched hair. Rubbed or flattened hair right behind the ears is the classic sign of a crown that is too narrow, too heavy, or pulled forward by a short browband.

The browband: how long is right?

The browband runs across the forehead from ear to ear and does one job that sounds small and is not: it holds the crown piece from sliding back on the neck, and it holds the cheek pieces in position without letting them pinch the base of the ears.

What makes a good one. Correct length first, decoration second. A browband is also the part most often built too short, because a short browband looks tidy on the rack. Beyond that, look for a browband that lies flat across the forehead rather than standing away from it, and be a little skeptical of heavily shaped or curved browbands unless you check them on your own horse. The British Horse Society specifically warns that shaped browbands need verifying so they do not press near the temporomandibular joint.

How it fits. It rides in the shallow dip below the ears. Run a finger under it end to end, and if a finger will not pass, it is too short. Published guides range from one to two fingers of room; we build to a comfortable finger. If the browband is pulling the crown piece forward against the back of the ears, it is too short, and you will see it in head shaking within a minute of bridling and in rubbed hair at the ear base afterward. If it sags or slides, it is too long, and it has stopped doing its job.

To measure one: run a tape from the back edge of one ear, across the forehead, to the back edge of the other, then add about half an inch. Do not shop by size name alone. Browband sizing is not standardized, and charts disagree: several put pony near 14 inches, cob 15, horse 16, and oversize 17, while others run a full inch longer at every step and draft ranges span 18 to 21. Measure your horse and buy to the number.

The cheek pieces: the part that sets everything else

The cheek pieces run from the crown down each side of the face to the bit. They are the adjustment. Change nothing else on the bridle and lengthen the cheeks, and you have changed the bit height, the poll pressure, the lip pressure, and where the buckles sit on your horse's face.

Cheek piece length, and why long or short both cause problems

Adjusted too long, the cheek pieces hang the bit too low. The bit bangs the incisors, and the horse learns to get its tongue over the mouthpiece, which is a hard habit to undo.

Adjusted too short, they pull the bit up into the corners of the mouth and put constant pressure on the lips and the poll. A horse fighting the bridle before you have even picked up a rein is often a horse whose cheeks are cranked up two holes too far.

Where the buckles end up. The one thing everyone agrees on is that the buckles should be even, on the same numbered hole left and right, or the bit hangs crooked. Height is less settled, and it depends on the pattern as much as the adjustment. On our bench they end up at eye level or a touch under it. What you want to avoid is a buckle riding right up under the browband, which is the position the British Horse Society flags as a cause of pressure around the temporomandibular joint, the jaw joint just below the base of the ear. That happens when a cheek piece is far too long for the horse and has to be buckled way up to compensate, which is a sizing problem, not an adjustment problem. Some makers head it off in the pattern instead: Dennis Moreland Tack builds a short-cheek browband headstall specifically so the buckle pieces cannot end up near the horse's eyes.

Leave yourself room. A correctly sized headstall lands near the middle holes, not the last one. If you are buckled on the final hole at either end, the headstall is the wrong size for the horse, and you have no adjustment left when you change bits. Closely spaced holes are a quality marker for exactly this reason: they let you move the bit a small amount instead of a big one.

How high should the bit sit? The wrinkle question

This is where sources genuinely disagree, so here is the split and then our position.

Most retail guides tell you to look for one to two wrinkles in the corner of the mouth. Plenty of credible sources say less than that, and the disagreement runs right through western sources, not just between western and English ones.

On the no-wrinkle side: AQHA describes a correctly adjusted bit, snaffle or curb, as sitting right in the corner of the mouth without a wrinkle, just hugging the lip, and allows a single wrinkle only for a horse already soft and responsive. Utah State University Extension says the same, that the bit should hang without causing wrinkles in the corners. Dennis Moreland, who started building tack in 1976, puts it plainly: not tight enough to cause wrinkles, and not loose enough to hang below the corners. On the one-wrinkle side, and worth naming because it is a serious western source, the University of Missouri Extension tells you to adjust the cheeks until the bit makes one small wrinkle.

Moreland's version is the rule we build and fit to. Snug against the corners, no wrinkle pulled up, and not hanging low enough to touch teeth. Two wrinkles is a step too far in our experience, and it is worth noticing that the sources calling for two are usually writing about English bridles.

One caveat worth keeping: bit height also depends on the horse and the stage of training. A green horse prone to putting its tongue over the mouthpiece may need it carried a touch higher until that habit is gone. Fit the horse, not the rule.

Width matters too. Aim for about an eighth to a quarter inch of mouthpiece showing on each side of the lips. Half an inch or more showing per side means the bit is too wide and will slide, and a bit that is too narrow will rub and pinch the corners.

The throatlatch: how many fingers?

The throatlatch runs from behind one ear, under the throat, and buckles below the other, usually on the near side. Its only job is keeping the bridle on the horse's head, and it is the cheapest insurance on the entire rig.

How it fits. Two to three stacked fingers between the strap and the throat is what we go by, and it is where Riding Warehouse lands too. Others run looser: AQHA and the University of Missouri Extension both say three fingers, and Dennis Moreland wants to slip a whole hand between the strap and the horse's cheek. Anywhere in that band is defensible. Nobody credible says one.

Too tight is a real problem, not a cosmetic one. The throat is where the horse flexes at the poll and where the airway runs, and a throatlatch snugged down like a cheek piece restricts both. Too loose is a different real problem: the throatlatch stops earning its keep, and a horse that stretches, yawns, and shakes its head can walk out of the bridle. If yours creeps forward over the ears during a ride, take it up one hole.

Note that many one-ear and split-ear headstalls have no throatlatch at all. That is the point of the next section.

Ear pieces: sliding, split, and slot

Instead of a browband, a lot of western headstalls hold position with an ear loop. Three versions exist, and the trade uses the names loosely:

  • Sliding ear (or slide ear): a separate U-shaped loop of leather threaded onto the crown so it can be moved along it. One headstall fits several horses.
  • Split ear, also called slit ear: a slit cut straight into the crown itself. Nothing moves, so the slit has to be long enough and placed right for the horse wearing it. It gives the cleanest line of the three.
  • Slot ear: a section of leather cut out of the crown to leave an opening, shorter than a slit and often finished with decorative stitching around it.

Which style you can use is decided by the bit, not by taste. A leverage bit settles the crown down onto the poll when you pick up the reins. A snaffle does not, which leaves the ear loop as the only thing keeping the bridle on the horse. So a snaffle wants a browband and a throatlatch. The mechanics, the failure mode, and which disciplines run which style are all in browband vs one-ear headstall, which is the post to read before you buy.

How an ear loop fits. Check it with a finger, at every point around the loop. If a finger will not pass between the leather and the ear, size up or change styles. With no browband holding the crown against sideways drift, the ear loop is doing that job on its own, which is why the check matters more here rather than less. Hair worn thin around the base of the ear is the tell that you got it wrong.

Bit ends: how the headstall attaches to the bit

The bit end is the bottom inch of the cheek piece, and it is the single most safety-critical inch on the bridle. If it lets go, you have no steering and no brakes. There are six common types:

Chicago screws are the ones riders tell stories about, and the stories are all the same story: the screw worked loose on a ride and the rein or the cheek piece came off the bit. They are convenient and they look good under a concho. If you use them, put a drop of removable thread locker on the threads and put your thumbnail on every screw before you get on. Snaps are fast and are the other commonly named weak point, since the spring and tongue are moving parts that wear.

There is a design logic behind the traditional leather tie that is worth understanding. When a leather tie fails, it fails at the tie or at the hole the tie passes through, which sacrifices an inch of leather instead of your whole rein. That is a feature, not a defect.

The curb strap: where it goes and how tight

The curb strap, also called the chin strap, runs under the chin groove between the bit's purchase arms. On a shanked bit it is not an accessory. It is the fulcrum. Without it the shanks have nothing to rotate against, and the leverage the bit is built around simply never happens. The major associations require one with a curb bit. AQHA accepts a curb strap or a curb chain and requires it to be at least half an inch wide and to lie flat against the jaw. NRCHA is stricter and requires leather, flat, flexible, and at least half an inch wide.

Where it attaches. It belongs on the same rings your headstall buckles to, up by the corners of the mouth, not on the rings at the bottom of the shanks where the reins go. Run it down there and the shank can no longer rotate into the chin, which means the bit has stopped working as a curb entirely. It is the most common tack error we see, and it is invisible from the saddle.

How tight. With the reins slack, two stacked fingers should fit under it. Flat, no twist, and the same on both sides. The better check is by function: pull the reins and watch the shanks, which should swing somewhere between 25 and 45 degrees before the curb touches chin. Dennis Moreland wants it inside 25 to 30 degrees; other guides allow the full 45. At rest the strap should be quiet and touching nothing. One more thing a tight curb costs you: a high-port bit needs some slack in the strap to rotate at all. Take that slack away and you have changed how the bit works, not just how quickly it engages. Go too far the other way and the port gets enough travel to reach the roof of the mouth, which is why this is a window and not a direction.

Reins and how they tie on

Reins are usually sold separately from the headstall, and western riders use four main kinds. Split reins are two separate straps, the most versatile option and the standard in cutting, horsemanship, reining, and pleasure. Closed or roping reins form a loop over the neck, favored for roping and speed events because you cannot drop them. Romal reins are closed reins joined to a braided romal by a connector, the California vaquero tradition, with rein buttons braided into the first stretch to add weight and keep the leather off a sweaty neck. And the mecate is the long single rope rein used with a bosal hackamore, or with a snaffle and slobber straps, which doubles as a lead when you step off.

What makes a good rein. Weight and consistency. A rein that is too light gives the horse no feel of the release, which is where the horse actually learns. Doubled and stitched reins get their weight from construction and stay flexible in cold weather. Single-ply harness reins get their weight from the hide itself, which is why the leather has to come from the right part of the hide. Laced reins add grip. Whatever the style, the two reins should weigh and hang the same.

Reins attach the same ways bit ends do, with the same trade-offs, and which one is right depends on how often you swap bits and how traditional you want the outfit to feel. Water loops, the small U-shaped leather straps that hold split reins to the bit, are the traditional working answer, and most tack makers rate them highly for reliability. What makes a headstall good instead of cheap?

Six things, and you can check five of them in a tack store without asking anyone.

1. The leather, by name

A good headstall names its leather. "Genuine leather" is not a compliment. It is an unregulated marketing label, usually meaning split leather from below the grain with a surface applied to it. What you want on a headstall is vegetable-tanned English bridle leather, which is hot stuffed with waxes so it sheds weather without ever feeling greasy, starts firm, and breaks in supple. Harness leather is the other right answer, stuffed far more heavily with tallows and oils, which is exactly why it survives horse sweat. That grease is not softness for its own sake. It is the defense against salt.

Chrome-tanned leather is optimized for drape, which is why it belongs in handbags. It will not hold a burnished edge and it does not hold a punched hole the way veg-tan does. Named American tanneries carry real weight here: Hermann Oak in St. Louis has been vegetable tanning since 1881, and Wickett & Craig in Pennsylvania runs hides roughly six weeks through 72 vats before hot stuffing them. 2. Where on the hide it was cut

This is the invisible one, and it is where cheap tack cheats. The back and bend of the hide are the firmest, densest leather, with the bend running two to four ounces thicker than the rest of the hide, which is why Weaver's hide guide recommends backs for goods that need length and durability, naming reins and stirrup leathers specifically. The same guide describes belly leather as softer and looser in the fibers. Belly has its uses, backed by stronger leather, but on its own in a strap that carries load it stretches, its holes elongate, and it cracks at the folds.

The arithmetic explains the rest. Premium American bridle leather runs roughly eleven to twelve dollars a square foot even at utility grade, and bends run close to double that per square foot. A $25 headstall cannot contain leather cut from the back of a good hide, before you account for hardware, labor, or shipping. It has to come out of the belly and the shoulder.

3. Doubled and stitched, or single ply on purpose

Doubled and stitched is not simply two straps glued together. The two plies are split down to thickness first, then glued, shaped, and stitched as one, which is why a doubled strap stays flexible instead of turning into a board. It also lets a maker put a softer lining leather against the horse's face. Single ply is a legitimate choice in heavy harness leather where the hide supplies the weight, but it has to be the right leather from the right part of the hide.

4. The stitching

A hand saddle stitch uses one thread and two needles, forming a figure eight so that every stitch is effectively its own knot. Break one and only that stitch is affected. A machine lockstitch uses two threads locked around each other, and a break can let a run unravel. That is the actual mechanical difference, and it is why load points on good tack still get hand work. Count the stitches, look for even spacing, and look for the small tell that a maker cared: leather hand sewn together underneath the buckles so the buckle cannot slip.

5. The edges

Run a thumb down the edge of the strap. A finished edge has been beveled to knock the corner off, then burnished, which uses friction and heat to compress and seal the fibers. It should feel rounded and slick, not square and fuzzy. A raw edge frays, takes on water, and wears faster. On cheap tack a "finished" edge is often just paint sprayed over an unbeveled cut, and it chips off.

6. The hardware

Solid stainless steel or solid brass. Stainless works because the chromium oxide film that protects it re-forms every time the surface is scratched, which is exactly what you want on a strap that lives in sweat. That film needs oxygen to rebuild, which is one more reason not to put tack away caked in mud and sweat. Solid brass will not rust, though it will tarnish and darken in humid conditions.

What fails is plating. A nickel-plated or brass-plated buckle is usually zinc or steel underneath with a thin coating over it. The buckle tongue's contact point is where the plating chips first, and it is also the highest-stress point on the part, so the exposed base metal starts corroding exactly where the load is. Zinc is also more brittle than brass, meaning it tends to snap rather than bend and warn you. Plated hardware costs a fraction of solid at manufacture, which is why it is on every cheap headstall.

Look for beveled buckle edges, too. The bevel is not decoration; it is what keeps the buckle from cutting into the strap.

And the one you cannot check in the store: care

Horse sweat is salt water plus body oils plus whatever is living in it, and the salt pulls moisture out of the leather fibers and leaves them stiff. Sweat and grit worked down into the seams is also what degrades thread, which is the quiet cause of tack failing under load. Wipe the headstall down after rides and clean it properly a few times a year, with saddle soap rather than whatever is by the kitchen sink. Go easy on the oil, too: heavy repeated neatsfoot oiling is known to break down stitching over time. Our five-step leather cleaning and conditioning guide covers the routine.

Conditioning replaces lost fats and slows drying out. It cannot reverse salt-rotted thread, elongated holes, stretched leather, or a crack at a fold. Those are replace-only.

What size headstall does my horse need?

Western headstall sizing is not standardized, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling one size. Some makers use pony, cob, horse, and draft. Some sell by leather width. Some list only a bit-end-to-bit-end length and leave it at that. So measure, then check the specific maker's published adjustment range.

To measure your horse:

  1. Crown and cheeks: start at one corner of the mouth, run the tape up the side of the face, over the poll behind the ears, and back down to the opposite corner of the mouth.
  2. Browband: from the back edge of one ear, across the forehead, to the back edge of the other, plus about half an inch.
  3. Throatlatch: from behind one ear, under the throat, to behind the other ear.

Then compare against the range the maker publishes rather than against a size name. Our browband headstalls adjust from 28 to 41 inches and the sliding one ears from 35 to 42, which covers most horses, and the goal in every case is to end up buckled near the middle of the holes with room to move in both directions.

One thing that catches people out: the bit changes the fit. A different bit can shift your cheek buckles a hole or two, so recheck the adjustment any time you change bits rather than assuming the headstall is set.

If the headstall genuinely fits and the horse still objects, the next stop is the teeth and then the vet, not a tighter noseband. Head shyness with uneven rein feel and a stiff carriage is worth a professional look.

Do you need a throatlatch on a western bridle?

With a snaffle, yes. A snaffle lifts the cheek pieces away from the face when you take up both reins, so an ear loop alone has nothing holding it down and the bridle can come off over the ears. With a shanked curb, the leverage pulls the crown down onto the poll instead, which is why one-ear and split-ear headstalls without throatlatches are conventional on finished horses in curbs.

What is the crown piece on a bridle?

The crown piece, also called the headpiece, is the strap lying over the poll just behind the ears. It carries the entire bridle, so its width and how flat it lies determine how the bridle's weight is distributed. Spreading the load over more area lowers pressure, but where that area falls matters too, which is why shaped and split crowns exist: they move the bearing surface off the spots that measure highest.

What is a chin strap for on a bridle?

Chin strap is another name for the curb strap, and some cow horse rulebooks use that term exclusively. On a shanked bit it is the fulcrum that the shanks rotate against, so the bit does not function as a curb without it. On a snaffle it is not doing that job at all; it just keeps the bit steady in the mouth. Optional for most riding, but note that some AQHA and NRCHA classes require a chin strap even on a snaffle, so check your rulebook before you show.

How tight should a western headstall be?

Part by part: the bit snug at the corners of the mouth with no wrinkle pulled up, a finger under the browband and under an ear loop, two to three at the throatlatch, and two under the curb strap. Cheek buckles at eye level or just under, on matching holes both sides.
